Reviewer: simplysimple,
I have never written a review before but after my experience with this collar I felt I should. I really enjoy reviews because it helps guide me with my product decision so I hope this helps somebody out there.

First off, I purchased this collar for my 55 pound lab mix. He's a great dog but spent the first 10 months of his life in a shelter. Bottom line he's got a few issues and while he has grown out of a lot of them he needed a little extra push to make him the outstanding dog he deserves to be.

The PetSafe Deluxe Big-Dog Trainer seemed like a reasonable choice give the price point and the range it claims. The collar seemed fairly well made however the remote feels cheaper than an old TV remote. From a functionality standpoint the collar seemed to work OK for the first 6 hours of use then it randomly became intermittent. Not a problem you want to have when a random training opportunity presents itself. After 1 day of use it got to the point where when testing with the included light I wasn't able to send a signal to the collar within 12 inches. I did some research online and found out that many people experienced the same issue and had no luck with replacement units. I understand this isn't the most expensive collar but for $80 I at least expect it to function as advertised. I really feel that Amazon should discontinue selling this item given that it doesn't work.

If you are really serious about wanting a training collar I would highly suggest Dogtra. We ordered a Dogtra model from Amazon and have had zero issues with this high quality collar. I'm not trying to push Dogtra but just letting you know what worked for me.

Hope you find this useful!

Ehhhh...not exactly what we had hoped.

We got this for our American Bulldog mix puppy. He's a real sweetie, but he's taken a liking to running off our property (about an acre of thick woods) when not on leash (or barking incessantly when we tie him up in the yard while we do yard work), or being a bit too aggressive with our 4 year old lab mix.

The biggest issue I have with this product is the delay that occurs. When I press either button, it will sometimes take several seconds to work - this results in confusing the puppy because he is sometimes not doing the unwanted behavior anymore.

I've also had the shock button stick a few times (sorry puppy!!!).

ALSO, ALSO - I would give this maybe 10-20 foot range outdoors.

Sometimes it just doesn't work at all - not sure if it's battery related (they're brand new batteries!!) or interference with other wireless devices in the house, or the fact that we're surrounded by high mountains ... ? who knows.

It works inside quite well (when it does work), I use only the tone 95% of the time, and then I follow up with a shock if he continues the unwanted behavior.

Outside is a different story. If I try the 'come' command and then use the tone when he ignores me, and then follow up with the shock if he ignores the tone, he just continues running off. Like he's running away from the collar/remote.

Perhaps with more training on a long lead, this issue will be resolved.

Based on the other reviews I read I REALLLLLLLYYYY wanted this to work - but for now I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars. I don't regret getting it (especially for indoor training), but for outdoor issues, it's not that great. Lower the price and I would raise it to 4 stars.
Love it!

Reviewer: Kahaluu,
We have a large german shepherd who was out of control with my wife, but obedient to me. Once this collar was on, and after a few shocks, she obeys. We hardly ever even put the collar on now, and when we do, we hardly ever put the batteries in. She knows, when the collar is on, it is time to be good.
Ok ...BUT!

As much as I like it I also dislike it. The item goes through very expensive batteries very quickly. It would have been cheaper to get a rechargable more expensive model than to have the cheaper model and replace batteries once every 2 weeks. I have a very clever dog and all she needs is a "beep" and not a shock. My friend has the same collar and a more stubborn dog and she needs to use the shock sometimes and goes through batteries even faster. Other than that it is a great tool to train your dog and get rid of unwanted behaviors..
Unit on dog turns off, and need to be very close to dog.

I was very excited to receive this based on reviews, but I am more than disappointed. In fact, I am returning the unit.

When the unit works as designed, it is wonderful for training. Please note I said WHEN.

There are two problems.

First, the on/off switch is attached to the collar, which is just a little rubber button that you push in, as opposed to a switch that you would put into an on position. The unit is constantly turned off. The only thing I can imagine is that when our dog is playing (she is a big dog) that her toys are pushing the button in and turning it off. It is not a problem with the batteries.

Secondly, once I have made sure that the collar unit is on, when I try to correct the dog, i need to be very close to her. I would say less than 10 feet. This does not work very well since by the time I approach her with the remote, she starts to approach me, tail wagging. Hence, I am not able to correct the bad behavior at all.
